we will have honey
to clear
our blurry
breaths
to ease the haze
of smoking sticks
and a thousand dooming deaths

we’ll drip with sweetness

our hope
will rise
despite the buzz
of poisoned wings
shattering our skies

and soon

the river
and very soon the gold
in streams of sweet redemption
will bubble
will unfold

and we
will thank
the Honeyguide
for showing us the way
and rest our hearts in sweetness
despite a darker day.

As ek woorde gehad het sou ek hulle versigtig optel en in my hande toevou.

Ek sou op sagte tone stap, my asem effens ophou, en stadig beweeg. Ek sou ‘n skrefie in my hande moes oophou om seker te maak hulle kry genoeg asem, en ek sou hulle fyn fyn dophou. Die op…en af…en op…en af van hulle kleinlyfie asems. Hulle oop bekkies. Rustig, veilig en vol vertroue in my hande.

Ek sou hulle tot by die voet van jou bed dra, en eers ‘n rukkie stilstaan om jou slaaplyf en skouers so diep as moontlik in te asem. Dan sou ek my woorde sag-sag-saggies by jou in die bed tel, en die komberse regtrek sodat julle almal warm en gemaklik verder kon slaap.

Die kleintjies sou instinktief teen jou lyf nessie, en hul vlerkies snoesig opdons teen die hitte van jou vel. Soos wat kinders graag doen.

Ek sou julle almal vir een laaste sagte oomblik met die arms van my oë vasdruk,en dan sou ek omdraai. En ek sou wegstap.

Want as ek sou omkyk sou ek dalk sien hoe jy omrol. En my woorde, my kleinstes, my kinders doodlê.

Sommer so in jou slaap.
